Before the start of the '09 season Casey, Brandon and myself decided to make the ultimate preseason predictions and bet on them. This is the look back at who was right, who was wrong and who WAY OFF.

World Series Winner: Cubs (7) Just plain wrong
Number of Games: 7 games (1) "                      "
World Series MVP: Rich Harden (5) "                    "

Summary for Mat: I was a year early on the Reds and Joey Votto and was pretty much wrong about the whole National League. Honestly, I have no idea why I liked the Cubs so much. Only thing I really predicted right there was Lincecum repeating as Cy Young. However, I straight up dominated the American League getting all the playoff teams correct, including the World Series participant Yankees. I was a year early on King Felix, however he did come in 2nd in the Cy. I won this one over Casey and Brandon with 36 points.

Casey: 23 Total Points

American League

MVP: Grady Sizemore No votes, got injured... and still is
Cy Young: CC Sabathia Close, 4th in voting
Rookie of the Year: David Price No votes, didn't quite deliver, but did in 2010
Manager of the Year: Terry Francona No votes, but a playoff team

Division Predictions:
West: Not bad, just switched up the 2nd/3rd place teams
  1. Angels Correct!

  1. Indians Way off, ended up tied for last
  2. Twins Won division
  3. White Sox Correct!
  4. Tigers Almost won division
  5. Royals Correct!
Wild Card Winner: Rays Wasn't close, 3rd in division 84-78 record
Best Record: Angels Almost, they won the West
Worst Record: Orioles Correct!
Pennant Winner: Red Sox Lost to Angels in first round of playoffs
World Series Winner: Red Sox  "                                                   "
Number of Games: 7 games  "                                               "
World Series MVP: Jon Lester  "                                                 "

National League

MVP: Chase Utley 8th in voting
Cy Young: Tim Lincecum Correct!
Rookie of the Year: Chris Dickerson No votes, creative pick though
Manager of the Year: Lou Piniella He was also high on the Cubbies

Division Predictions:
West:
  1. Giants Homer pick... but a year off
  2. Dodgers Close, won division
  3. Diamondbacks
  4. Rockies
  5. Padres
East:
  1. Phillies Correct!
  2. Mets Ended up injured and in 4th
  3. Braves Correct!
  4. Marlins Surprised everyone with an 87-75 record
  5. Nationals Correct!
Central:
  1. Cubs Finished 2nd
  2. Cardinals Finished 1st
  3. Astros
  4. Brewers
  5. Reds
  6. Pirates Correct!
Wild Card Winner: Mets This was pretty wrong, 4th in division, 70-92 record
Best Record: Cubs Missed out on division by 7.5 games
Worst Record: Padres Not a bad pick but still wrong
Pennant Winner: Phillies Correct!

Summary for Casey: He seemed to be close on a lot of divisional and playoff places but they just didn't work out. His best two predictions was Lincecum winning the Cy Young and the Phillies making the World Series. His worst picks were the Mets winning the Wild Card and Grady Sizemore for AL MVP.

Brandon: 12 Total Points

American League

MVP: Carlos Quentin No votes, hasn't been the same since MVP derailing '08 self-inflicted injury
Cy Young: Roy Halladay 5th in voting, a year early...
Rookie of the Year: Chris Getz No votes, never really been close to good yet
Manager of the Year: Ron Gardenhire 2nd in votes, won the Central

Division Predictions:
West:
  1. Angels Correct!
  2. Mariners
  3. Rangers
  4. Athletics Correct!
East: Pretty close overall
  1. Red Sox
  2. Yankees
  3. Rays Correct!
  4. Orioles
  5. Blue Jays

National League

MVP: David Wright 28 players got votes, Wright was not one of them
Cy Young: Brandon Webb No votes, got injured
Rookie of the Year: Jason Motte No votes, missed out on closer role, good idea though
Manager of the Year: Lou Piniella We were all high on the Cubs apparently

Division Predictions:
West:
  1. Dodgers Correct!
  2. Diamondbacks Worst team in West
  3. Giants
  4. Rockies
  5. Padres
East:
  1. Mets Ouch, not close, came in 4th
  2. Phillies Won division
  3. Braves Correct!
  4. Marlins
  5. Nationals Correct!
Central: His best division...
  1. Cubs Finished 2nd
  2. Cardinals Won division
  3. Reds
  4. Brewers
  5. Astros Correct!
  6. Pirates Correct!
Wild Card Winner: Phillies Close, they won the East
Best Record: Cubs Really, what was the deal with the Cubs being so popular?
Worst Record: Pirates Just missed, 3 games away from Nationals
Pennant Winner: Mets Extremely wrong.

Summary for Brandon: Well, lets just say he tried hard. I mean a lot of his failure is bad luck, Quentin and Wright had off years, Webb got injured after the first start and a couple of the contenders didn't turn out to be any good. However, he did get a couple playoff teams correct and was really close and his Gardenhire choice for AL Manager of the Year.

In Closing: I kinda dominated the '09 predictions. Unfortunately the '10 predictions got lost and were also way more complicated. This year I'd like to get as many people doing this as possible, its really cool to look back and see what you were thinking.

1 comment:

  1. Id like this to go on record to say that I probably continued to ride high on los gigantes for the 2010 season and deserve some credit.
And that lincecum is a beast.
And that I might of picked posey for rookie of the year.
But i probably didnt pick the giants to win the world series!!!!!!!!!! YEEEAA
We need to set up new predictions asap
